Wollastonite is a calcium metasilicate (CaSiO3) and was so named in 1822 to honour the English chemist and natural philosopher William Hyde Wollaston.

Wollastonite forms when impure limestone is metamorphosed (subjected to heat and pressure) or silica-bearing fluids are introduced into calcareous sediments during metamorphism. In both cases, calcite reacts with silica to produce wollastonite and carbon dioxide. Wollastonite also can crystallise directly from a magma that has an unusually high carbon content, but this is a less common occurrence.

Wollastonite is a naturally occurring white, non-metallic mineral with an acicular or needle - shaped crystal structure. This distinctive property makes wollastonite a versatile industrial mineral.

Mining : Supplies can be obtained from two mines in China.
- In Jiangxi Province, the deposits of this mine are unique for their purity and acicularity. More than 100,000 metric tons of high quality ore are mined annually. Modified wollastonite for use in brake pads, etc, is available and in smaller quantities.
- In Fujian Province, this mine supplies bulk product for ceramics, ceramic glazes, and for varnishes and paints. For quantities of 500 Tonne or more, including dollop grade with capacity up to 5,000 T/month. (dollop - A large lump or portion of a solid matter)
Worldwide annual consumption is about 600,000 tons per year.

Milling : The patented milling equipment handles the extra fine particle powder of the wollastonite, preserving the unique properties of high aspect-ratio and fibrous mechanical reinforcement of the wollastonite, which are important to industry.

Modified : The surface of some of the wollastonite products are chemically modified to improve their performance (eg silane coated).

Packaging : From 25kg PP weave bags, 50kg bags, to bulk containers. Also any package according to your requirement.

Uses : In applications requiring mechanical reinforcement, heightening intensity, hardness, heat resistance, abrasion resistance, flexing resistance, and rotting resistance.
Used as a flux for welding, and in the manufacture of ceramics, plastics, rubber, paper, paint and coatings. Ceramics and plastics are the greatest users.
The use in ceramics greatly reduces firing temperatures, speeds up prodcution, therefore saving fuel costs.

Replaces : A good substitute for asbestos in thermal insulation applications. Also replaces fibre talc and glass fibre, etc.

Indicators : It is non-poisonous, tasteless and harmless to people. Recommend breathing filter in dusty situations.
